A Day of Spiders and Smiles
Shaurya celebrates Aadi's third birthday with red balloons, tasty treats, and a surprise hug.
The sun woke up early over Lake Stevens, painting the sky in colors of peach and gold. It was a very special Saturday for Shaurya. Mamma and Baba were already moving about the house with bright smiles. Today was not a day for just playing at home. Today was a day for a party. Shaurya sat in his high chair, his little fingers tapping on the tray. Tap, tap, tap. He was wearing his softest shirt, ready for an adventure. Mamma packed the bag with diapers, wipes, and a little water bottle. Baba checked the keys. It was time to go see Aadi. Aadi is Shaurya's friend, and today, Aadi was turning three years old. Three is a big number for a little boy. One, two, three.
The car ride was smooth. Shaurya looked out the window at the tall green trees of Washington passing by. The sky was clear, and the world felt wide and welcoming. Soon, they arrived at the house of Dia Mashi and Sudipto Mesho. In Bengali, we call a special auntie 'Mashi' and a special uncle 'Mesho.' They are like family, full of love and warm hugs. As soon as the car door opened, Shaurya could hear the sounds of joy. There was music playing, the sound of children laughing, and the gentle chatter of grown-ups.
Inside, the house had been transformed. It was a Spider-Man party! Shaurya looked up and saw red balloons. He looked down and saw blue streamers. There were spider webs made of soft white string stretched across the walls, but they weren't scary at all. They were sparkly and fun. Red and blue, red and blue. Shaurya liked the colors. They were bright like his favorite toys. He saw little pictures of Spider-Man crawling on the walls. Pop! A balloon bobbed in the air. Swish! A streamer danced in the breeze of the fan. Everything felt like a celebration.
Aadi was running around with a big smile, showing everyone his three fingers. "I am three!" he seemed to say. Dia Mashi gave Shaurya a big, warm greeting, and Sudipto Mesho ruffled his hair gently. The house was filled with the smell of yummy things. Shaurya's tummy gave a little rumble. It was time for the party food. Mamma sat Shaurya down and brought him a small plate. First, there was mac and cheese. It was yellow and creamy and very soft. Mmmm. Shaurya took a bite. It was warm and cheesy. Then, there were pieces of bright red watermelon. Crunch, crunch, splash. The juice was sweet and cool. It felt good on his gums. Shaurya ate his watermelon happily, watching the other children play.
There were many friends there. The room was full of energy. Children were crawling and toddling and jumping. Shaurya felt very brave. He decided to join in. He crawled over the soft carpet, his little hands making a soft thud-thud-thud sound. He looked at a red ball. He looked at a blue truck. He was a busy boy, exploring the Spider-Man world. Then, a little girl named Inaya came over. Inaya is a baby too, smaller and very sweet. She saw Shaurya and wanted to show him she liked him. She reached out her little arms and gave Shaurya a big, sudden hug.
Oh! Shaurya was very surprised. He wasn't expecting a squeeze. His eyes went wide. His lip began to tremble. A little tear gathered in the corner of his eye. "Waaaa," he cried softly. It was just a little bit scary to be hugged so suddenly when you are busy playing. Mamma saw right away. She scooped Shaurya up into her arms. She held him close against her heart. Thump-thump, thump-thump. Shaurya felt the warmth of Mamma's sweater. He smelled her familiar scent.
"It is okay, Shaurya," Mamma whispered in his ear. She wiped the tiny tear away with her thumb. "Inaya is a friend. In Bengali, we call a friend a 'bondhu.' A bondhu is someone who likes to play and share. Her hug was a happy hug. It was a way of saying she likes you. You are safe, Shaurya. A friend's hug is a kind thing." Shaurya listened to Mamma's voice. It was like a soft song. He looked over at Inaya, who was now playing with a block. He realized she was just a little bondhu like him. He took a deep breath. His heart slowed down. He felt brave again.
Then, it was time for the most exciting part of the day. It was time for the cake! Everyone gathered around the table. In the center was a magnificent Spider-Man cake. It had red frosting and blue frosting and a big number three on top. Sudipto Mesho lit the three candles. One, two, three. The little flames flickered like tiny stars. Everyone began to sing. "Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you!" The voices were loud and happy. Shaurya clapped his hands. Clap, clap, clap. He loved the rhythm of the song. Aadi took a big breath and—whoosh!—he blew out the candles. Everyone cheered and clapped.
Shaurya got a tiny piece of the cake. It was soft and sweet. It melted on his tongue. He had a little bit of frosting on his nose, which made Baba laugh. Baba took a picture of Shaurya with his blue nose. It was a happy moment. The party began to wind down. The children were getting tired, and the sun was starting to dip lower in the sky. It was time to say goodbye. Shaurya waved his little hand. "Bye-bye, Aadi. Bye-bye, Dia Mashi. Bye-bye, Sudipto Mesho." He even gave a little wave to his bondhu, Inaya.
The car ride home was very quiet. The sky was turning a soft purple color, the color of grapes. Shaurya felt his eyelids getting heavy. The movement of the car was like a giant cradle rocking him to sleep. He thought about the red balloons. He thought about the yellow mac and cheese. He thought about the warm hug from his friend. He wasn't scared anymore. Hugs are nice. Friends are good.
When they got back to their house in Lake Stevens, Baba carried a sleepy Shaurya inside. Mamma changed him into his soft pajamas. They smelled like lavender and home. She tucked him into his crib and kissed his forehead. The room was dark and cool. Outside, the moon, the beautiful chaand, was watching over the house.
"Today was a big day, my little Shaurya," Mamma whispered. "You went to a party. You ate sweet cake. You learned that a bondhu is a wonderful thing to have. Now it is time to rest. Sleep deep, little spider-hero. Sleep deep and dream of balloons." Shaurya snuggled into his blanket. He closed his eyes and let out a long, happy sigh. The house was still. The world was quiet. Shaurya was safe, Shaurya was loved, and Shaurya was very, very sleepy. Goodnight, Shaurya. Shuvo ratri.
Gentle lesson
A hug from a friend is a kind and safe way to say hello.
